Direct Debits for Bank Switching in the UK

A simple guide to using Direct Debits when taking part in a UK current account switching offer.

Why are Direct Debits important for bank switching?

Some UK banks offer cash bonuses or other incentives when you switch your current account. Depending on the offer, the receiving bank may require one or more active Direct Debits as part of its qualifying criteria.

Requirements vary between banks and can change, so always check the current terms before starting your switch. DebitKind cannot guarantee that a particular Direct Debit will satisfy a bank's rules.

Do I need one Direct Debit or two?

That depends on the bank and the offer. Some switching offers may require one active Direct Debit, while others may require two or more.

Contributor provides one £1 monthly Direct Debit through Stripe. Champion provides two separate £1 monthly Direct Debits through Stripe and GoCardless.

When should I start my bank switch?

Setting up a Direct Debit is only the first step. Allow time for the required Direct Debits to become active on your existing bank account before starting your switch.

Check your account and the receiving bank's current switch terms before proceeding.

How does DebitKind help charity?

DebitKind is an independent service designed to make setting up low-cost Direct Debits for bank switching simpler.

For every successful £1 monthly DebitKind payment, 10p is pledged to the charity you choose via Work for Good.

DebitKind is an independent service and is not a bank. Bank-switch incentive requirements are set by individual banks and may change. Always check the current terms of your chosen switching offer.
Questions before you start?

Frequently asked questions

Is DebitKind a bank?

No. DebitKind is an independent commercial service operated by a sole trader and does not provide a bank account, card or mobile-banking app.

Does DebitKind guarantee my bank-switch bonus?

No. Bank-switch conditions vary and change. Always check the receiving bank's current eligibility criteria before switching.

When should I start my bank switch?

Do not rely solely on completing the DebitKind setup. Wait until the required Direct Debits appear active on your bank account and then check the receiving bank's current terms before starting your switch.

Why does Champion use Stripe and GoCardless?

Champion uses two separate Direct Debit arrangements: one £1 monthly Direct Debit through Stripe and one £1 monthly Direct Debit through GoCardless.

Where does the charitable contribution go?

You choose one of the participating charities. DebitKind pledges 10% of successful monthly payments to your selection via Work for Good.

Can I cancel?

Yes. Contributor and Champion have no fixed minimum term and can be cancelled at any time by emailing [email protected] . You can also cancel a Direct Debit mandate through your bank.

How much is the Bank Switching Toolkit?

Nothing. It will be completely free to download. No payment or subscription will be required.

When will the Toolkit be available?

It is currently being finalised and tested. It will be released soon.
